Interview with Roswitha Britz at ECC 2015: Time for an alliance between patients and professionals

Health professionals were urged to look at treatments from the patient’s point of view by Ms Roswitha Britz, President of Europa Donna, the European Breast Cancer Coalition. At the European Cancer Congress (Vienna, Austria; 25 – 29 September 2015), she pointed out discrepancies in how patients and professionals assess quality of life issues.

Ms Britz was speaking at a joint ECCO/SIOG symposium which discussed the theoretical case of an 83 year old breast cancer patient from many points of view. She pointed out that loss of a breast was taken very seriously by doctors but often not so seriously by patients. Hair loss, by contrast, could be devastating for patients but was sometimes not considered as such by their carers.

In this video, she tells journalist Helen Saul that patients who are fully informed and involved in the decision-making process cope better with long term side effects. She calls for an alliance between patients and professionals.
