'Round-table-discussion' about the Quality of Life of Cancer patients and their carers, TAO Paris, November 2013

Participating in the 'Round Table Discussion' are the following editors of the Quality of Life in Oncology Resource Centre:

  • Dr. Matti S. Aapro, Clinique de Genolier, Multidisciplinary Oncology Institute, Genolier, Switzerland
  • Dr Florian Scotté, Department of Medical Oncology, Georges Pompidou European Hospital, Paris, France
  • Dr Carla Ripamonti, Department of Hematology and Pediatric Onco-Hematology, Fondazione IRCCS, Istituto Nazionale Tumori Via Venezian Milano, Italy.

The discussion introduces the Transatlantic oncology meeting and then focusses on the supportive care situations in particular in Italy and France, but also the relation to what is happening in the world. Important issues are the availability of information (such as guidelines) in one’s own language. In Italy there is great success with moving less severe toxicity cases to the ambulatory sector, which is much cheaper and highly appreciated by patients. Guidelines and their implementation as well as (perception of) high costs involved with supportive care drugs is further discussed. The latter is also referred to in light of the reimbursement policies for new drugs.
